Academic & Professional Development

Externship Program Overview

Externships are unpaid, for credit positions outside the law school working with law firms, in-house corporate counsels, government agencies, the courts or public interest organizations. Externships allow students to learn and enhance their skills through practical experiences in these field placements.  You cannot begin to know what you need to know to practice law in three or four years of law school alone.  You need experience.

Learning from experience is critical for your life long professional development as an attorney. An externship with its accompanying seminar provides field experience and an opportunity to learn the reflective lawyering skills you will need throughout your career.

Currently, there are five externship programs that offer students an opportunity to receive academic credit for their fieldwork:

Student Eligibility

The externship program is open to all students who have completed their first year of legal studies and who have completed Pleading and Civil Procedure. Placements are made in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Participation in the program is contingent upon acceptance by the firm or company in which the placement is sought and approval by the Director of Law Externships. Individual placements may have additional educational or experiential requirements.
